Introduction
Eternatus and Eternamax make their debut! We can only battle against Enernamax for candy, and can only catch one Eternatus.
Both versions with have Dragon 뿅 & Poison ẍ typing.
Eternatus will have stats of 278 attack, 192 defense, and 268 stamina. This will make it a decent attacker, but its main use comes from it adventure effect, Dynamax Cannon. This effect will increase all max move by one level, which for moves already at level 3 will push them to the new level 4.
The Eternamax that we will be facing will have massive tank stats of 251 Attack, 505 Defense, and 452 Stamina. This will be the toughest Max Boss yet, and there may never be a greater one. I’m not sure why it’s being released now when there is still a ton of Gigantamax that need to be released. It kinda seems like they are going to discontinue max battles releases, but I digress.
Attackers
-Eternamax is weak to 4 typings…
(Dragon 뿅, Psychic ໑, Ground ⏚, and Ice ⁂)
-Attack rankings is based on the amount of damage done by a Pokémon’s Max Attack. I am going to simplify the damage equation here (don’t come for me lol). Damage is based on the Pokémon’s attack stat, its max move’s power, and the Max Boss’ type weaknesses.
-Dynamax and Gigantamax attackers both have different Power values based on the max move’ level
Dynamax // Gigantamax
Level 1: 250 // 350 power
Level 2: 300 // 400 power
Level 3: 350 // 450 power
Note: As much as the trolls want to spread misinformation because they can’t read Pokebattler’s ranking system, the crowned dogs (Zacian & Zamazenta) have max move power equivalent to Dynamax power.
For some reason people believe that they have max attack power higher than Gigantamax attacks, yet cannot provide an exact power level or a source.

Windy Weather
-Dragon 뿅, Psychic ໑, & Flying ౯ are boosted. High chance of getting windy weather
-Excadrill drops to #5 and only 79.74% damage compared to Latios.
-#6 & beyond are less than or equal to 70% damage compared to Latios. The rest of the list can be reviewed in the link below
Sunny Weather
-Ground ⏚, Fire ঌ, & Grass ✿ are boosted. High chance of getting sunny weather
-Excadrill gets a huge boost and takes the #1 spot. Latios comes in at #2 at 87.10% damage compared to Excadrill.
-D Max Kingler takes the #4 spot and pushes Latias to #6. Both are still above 75%
-#7 & beyond are below that 75% mark. The rest of the list can be reviewed in the link below
Final Remarks on Attackers
-Build two attackers to use for the different weather conditions.(Latios or Metagross or Hatterene) & Excadrill
-You need 50 XL candy to max out Latios’ Max Attack. If you do not have that then Metagross may be your best choice.
-Building an attack Zacain would not be a bad idea either if you had extra resources….More on that later.
Defenders
Pure Tanks
-Pure tank score is based on the % of damage a Pokemon’s total HP takes from the max boss’ attacks in the raid phase.
-That percentage can then be calculated to “the number of hits a pokemon can take before it faints or needs a heal”
-The goal of a pure tank to go survive as long as possible and generate max energy as quickly as possible.
-0.5 second fast moves are recommended , as it generates max energy the quickest. To add to this, charged attacks should not be used as they are all longer than 0.5 second.

-Steel types reign supreme as they resist all but one moves that Eternamax has.
-At the end of it all, only the top 3 really matter. A steel type & something to cover steel’s weakness.
Note: Dynamax Metagross with Fury Cutter and Dynamax Metagross with Zen Headbutt are two different Pokemon. Zen Headbutt makes for a bad Tank, and Fury Cutter make for abad attacker vs Eternamax. It’s one or the other.
Here comes the deep dive…
Vs Hyper Beam (Normal ⊙)
-Zamazenta (16.68) becomes a better #1 when compared to all move combinations.
-Blissey (24.58) & Zacian (27.66) switch rankings
-Gengar, both D & G max (32.56), come in at rank 7 as it double resists normal type attacks
-Omastar (36.03) comes in at rank 8 as it single resist normal type attacks
Note: Hyper Beam is a one bar move, meaning it takes a long time to charge up. If all 4 trainers on a team use 0.5 second fast moves, then the max meter may charge up before Eternamax has the chance to attack. The max phase would reset the timer to on the Hyper Beam usage.
While Hyper Beam hits the hardest, it may be the easiest to avoid altogether if done correctly.
Vs Flamethrower (Fire ঌ)
Dynamax Omastar
w/ Mud Shot (0.5s)
#1
Target Tankiness
6.09 / 12.86 (avg. 9.47)
Dynamax Blissey
w/ Pound (0.5s)

Dynamax Kabutops

Dynamax Latias
w/ Dragon Breath (0.5s)
#4
Target Tankiness

Dynamax Suicune
w/ Extrasensory (1s)
#5
Target Tankiness
7.83 / 15.67 (avg. 11.75)
-The tanks with steel typing completely disappear as steel is weak to fire, leaving only Blissey at #2
- Omastar & Kabutops do not have tanky stats, but both double resist fire.
-Latias & Suicine do have tanky stats but only single resist fire
-Suicine has a 1 second fast move. Its score is dependent that the other three trainers are using Pokemon in the raid phase with 0.5 second fast moves.
Vs Dragon Pulse (Dragon 뿅)
-Zacain (7.95) switches rankings with Zamazenta (12.19) becoming the new #1. It is head and shoulders above the others as it triple resist dragon moves.
-Blissey (17.77) is still #3
-Hatterene (20.45) joins the chat at #4 due to its double resistance to dragon.
-The rest of rankings stays the same for the most part, except the others past #4 get pushed down one ranking due to Hatterene.
Vs Sludge Bomb & Cross Poison (Poison ẍ)
-The list is scrambled up a bit but it’s mostly minor chance
-Zamazenta (7.27) is still #1.
-Excadrill (10.59) moves to #2 as it triple resist poison. Big change.
-Blissey (16.84) drops to #5
-Zacian (18.95) drops to #6. It’s double resistance to poison from its steel type drops to single resistance due to its fairy type being weak to poison. Zacian would probably have the #1 overall rating if it wasn’t for the fact that Eternatus has 2 poison moves vs just one for the other types.
Final Remarks on Pure Tanks
-The best overall tanks are the steel tanks, but they get completely destroyed by firethrower
- Blissey is a great tank vs all the moves, including fire thrower. If you use Blissey, I would advise to start with it. We don’t know the moves the max boss will use until it uses it. If you start with a Steel tank and the first attack is Flamethrower, you will be cooked, literally.
-The best pure tank combination would be Blissey and a Steel type tank (Zacian, Zamazenta, Metagross, Corvikight, or Excadrill)…
…One of the Crowned Doggos and Blissey is probably best. Switch to Blissey to catch firethrower, and use the doggo for everything else. Zacain covers Dragon Pulse better than Zamazenta covers Sludge Bomb & Cross Poison, but you’re more likely to get the poison types attacks. Zamazenta & Blissey cover each other better compare to Zacian & Blissey.
But Zacian is also a decent attacker against Eternamax. It can chunk out some damage during the max phase if it needs to stay in for a heal.
…If you do not have a doggo, then Blissey and Excadrill would be best; with Blissey being the main tank and Excadrill catching the poison type moves.
Healer Tanks
-Healer Tanks are specialized Pure Tanks
Above is a more in depth explanation of the healer.
The key takeaway is that Max Spirit heals a percentage of the user’s HP to all Pokémon currently on the field. The amount of healing increases with the level of the move.
Level 1: 8% of user's HP per use
Level 2: 12% of user's HP per use
Level 3: 16% of user's HP per use
-Best way to rank healers is to sort all max Pokémon by HP. Which you can do for your collection in the official app.
Here is a good database for all Pokemon. Search “Max” then sort by STA.
Dynamax Blissey
w/ Pound (0.5s)
#1
Dynamax Chansey
w/ Pound (0.5s)
#2
Dynamax Wailord
w/ Water Gun (0.5s)
#3
Gigantamax Snorlax
w/ Lick (0.5s)
#4
Gigantamax Lapras
w/ Psywave (0.5s)
#5
Heal Per Use
33HP
-Blissey is the clear choice here. It is the Pokémon with the largest HP base stat, period. It will never be surpassed in the Max Healer meta. I highly recommend having at least 2 of these at all time, but only one would be needed for a heal team vs Eternamax if paired with a good steel pure tank (So long as Blissey and the other pure tank are level 40+, otherwise go with 2 Blisseys)
-If resources are tight, I would recommend building two Chanseys at level 30 for a Healing team then throw an attacker in the back.
Shield Tanks
First some words on Max Guard
-Max Guard adds additional HP in front of the user’s HP. The amount it adds increase with the level of the move
Level 1: 20 HP per use
Level 2: 40 HP per use
Level 3: 60 HP per use
-Attacks from the max boss will drain the guard HP first.
-A Pokemon can only hold 3 shields at a time (4 for Zamazenta, so long as it does not completely lose all shields). At level 3, that would be 180 (240) extra HP.
-The max boss will only use its targeted attack on Pokemon with shields up. If no shields are up, it will target any pokemon on the field at random. If multiple Pokemon have shields up, it will target one of those at random.
-Targeted attacks can be, and should be dodged as much as possible
-Shield Tanks are specialized Pure Tanks
-Shield tanks score is based how much HP is lost when a Pokemon takes from the max boss’ attacks in the raid phase.
NOTE: PokeChespin amounts for Zamazenta’s extra in the Pure Tank Score but not the Shield Tank score. You may notice a slight difference in Zamazenta’s shield score here than on the other site.
-That amount can then be calculated to “the number of hits a pokemon will take before it loses a shield / all of its shields”
-The role of the shielder is to have shields up at all times and keep the targeted attacks away from everyone else.
-0.5 second fast moves are recommended , as it generates max energy the quickest. To add to this, charged attacks should not be used as they are all longer than 0.5 second.

-The doggos again, are neck and neck.
-Shuckle’s score is dependent that the other three trainers are using Pokemon in the raid phase with 0.5 second fast moves.
Vs Hyper Beam (Normal ⊙)
Dynamax Shuckle
w/ Rock Throw (1s)

Dynamax Metagross
w/ Fury Cutter (0.5s)
#5
Target Tankiness
29.00 / 60.00 (avg. 44.50)
-While Shuckle comes in at #1 there are two point to be made
1.Its score, again, is dependent on the fast moves of the other trainers and
2. As discussed in the Pure Tank section, Hyper Beam can be avoided altogether if all trainers use 0.5 second fast moves
On paper Shuckle is great, but in practice vs Hyper Beam, it’s bad.
-Do not worry too much about a counter to Hyper Beam
Vs Dragon Pulse (Dragon 뿅)
-Zacian (13.00) comes in at #1 and is head, shoulders, knees, but not quite toes, ahead of everyone else
-It’s followed by Zamazenta (26.43) at #2 and Hatterene (26.50) at #3. The scores only get a lot worse from there compared to Zacian.
Vs Sludge Bomb & Cross Poison (Poison ẍ)
-The shifting around is similar to that of the Pure Tank Vs Poison attacks
-Zamazenta (15.76) is #1 followed by Metagross (20.75) at #2 and Excadrill (21.50) is boosted to #3.
-Zacian (31.00) drops to # 8
Vs Flamethrower (Fire ঌ)
Dynamax Omastar
w/ Mud Shot (0.5s)
#1
Target Tankiness
9.00 / 19.00 (avg. 14.00)
Dynamax Kabutops
w/ Mud Shot (0.5s)
#2
Target Tankiness
10.00 / 20.00 (avg. 15.00)
Dynamax Omanyte
w/ Mud Shot (0.5s)
#3

Dynamax Latias
w/ Dragon Breath (0.5s)
#4
Target Tankiness
12.00 / 25.00 (avg. 18.50)
Dynamax Kabuto
w/ Mud Shot (0.5s)
#5
Target Tankiness
13.00 / 26.00 (avg. 19.50)
-Unfortunately, we do not have Blissey to cover the Flamethrower while still being a top Tank against the other moves.
-Omastar is probably the best bet here as it also has an overall ranking at #7 vs all move combinations
-Latias is a good option too as it is a rank #5 attacker, while it may been to recharge its shield a round earlier than Omastar, it can use its remaining max moves to attack. The only issue is resources. Building a maxed attacking shield tank does take a good amount of XL candies and Latias is a rarer legendary.
Final Remarks on Shield Tanks
-The best overall shield tanks are the steel tanks, but they get completely destroyed by firethrower (So does Shuckle due to its bug typing)
-You can start with Omastar or Latias to avoid having your steel shield tanks from getting cooked with Flamethrower.
Or
Start with Zamazenta as it starts with a shield already and can sever as the best Pure Tank until you can get more shields up at the first Max phase
- I would not recommend Shuckle due to the special conditions vs Hyper Beam. if you do not have a pre set team of 4, you have no idea if the other three trainers will use pokemon in the raid phase with 0.5 second fast moves. Big risk with practically no reward.
Roles & Strategy
ROLES
-Trainers are placed into groups of four. Energy generation, max boss attacks, Max Guard, and max spirt will only have impacts within the group.
-Damage to the max boss will show for the whole lobby / all groups.
-Instead of all trainers acting like attackers, healers and shielders, you break the roles down to be worked by one or two trainers (Unless you’re on a team of 4 trainers bring level 50 counters, then everyone can run a modified Attacker team)
-2 attack focused trainers,1 Shield focused trainer, and 1 heal focused trainer.
—————Attack Trainer————
Sample team
(Lead- pure tank) (Backline- pure tank) (special- attacker)
Lead Blissey, Crowned Doggo, and an attacking Latios / Excadrill
Modifications can be made. Most notable would be to adding some shields or heals to the lead Blissey
—————Heal Trainer—————
Sample teams
(Heal Tank) (heal tank) (heal tank / Attacker)
Or just run a modified Attacker team and focus on healing when your team calls for it
——————Shield Trainer—————
Sample teams possibilities:
(Lead- shield tank) (backline-shield tank)(special-shield tank)
Zamazenta, Zacian, Omastar / Latias
Or
(Lead- Shield tank) (backline-Shield Tank)(special- Attacker)
Crowned Doggo, Omastar / Latias, and an attacking Latios / Excadrill
Or run a modified attacker team and always keep shields up. This one is less recommended, even for an all level 50 team.
STRATEGY
First Raid Phase
The battle opens with first raid phase and we have all 4 trainer/ Pokémon generating energy with only 0.5 sec fast moves.
First Max Phase
Shield trainers should switch in their Attacking shield tank if applicable and use all three shields. Otherwise, keep your lead in, take a heal for your healer, and use 3 shields.
Attack trainers should switch to their Attackers if their pure tanks did not take damage / very little damage. If you keep the pure in for heals, let your heal trainer know, and use this max phase to hit weak max attack, or shield your pure tank up.
Heal Trainer- listen to your team. Most times, you will heal in the first max phase.
Additional Raid and Max Phases
Repeat raid phase. Attacker put their pure tanks back in, healers keep the same mon in, and shielders keep their shielders in.
From here….
Attack trainers should only really look to heal their first pure tank if the max boss still have way more than half their health. You want your pure tanks to last half the battle. You are an attack trainer, focusing on healing too much might let the battle get to the enraged phase after 5/ 6 minutes. If you didn’t do enough damage, you will be one shotted and the battle will be over.
Shielder- Your top priority is to keep shields up, attacking should come after that. Do not be afraid to get risky though.
Healers! keep tanking and healing. Attack if possible.
Repeat repeat repeat….. win
If everyone uses the correct moves in the raid phase, each team should be able to get 12 max phases in before the max boss starts dropping nukes. You might be able to get another max phase or two after that.
Miscellaneous Tip
-Trainer playing shields or heals can use Zamazenta's adventure effect to increase defense stat for your Pokemon
-Trainer playing the attacker role can use Zacian’s adventure effect and a mushroom to increase the attack stat of your attacking pokemon.
-If the max boss’s moveset is not ideal, everyone can back out and start over. It will reset the boss’s moves. This might not be doable as there will be a large number of trainers both in person and remote due to Eternamax’s massive bulk stats. Convincing remote raiders to back out if nearly impossible due to a lack of communication channels and them not wanting the timer to run out and lose a remote pass.
Conclusion
1. Review this guide and links to get an idea of the team you want to to build
2. Review your existing pokemon and see what you have.
3. Reach out to others and try to plan a team ahead of time
4. DO NOT USE anything more than a 0.5 sec fast move in the raid phase. This causes you to stay in the raids phase for double the amount of time if all trainer use 1+ sec fast moves. This means more damage done to your tanks per round with less chances to heal and shield.
5. Max mushrooms should only be used by trainers in the attack role or those running an attacking shield tank
6. Use level 30 or higher Pokémon with at relevant moves unlocked and leveled up.
